What We're Listening To - Vol. 14

Veg Out Edition

The last few weeks or so have been quite busy here in Washington, D.C. Between the Pope's visit and the Landmark Music Festival, there has been no shortage of things to do around the city. And it doesn't look like things will be slowing down any time soon - next up on the list of big attractions in DC is this weekend's DC VegFest

The vegetarian and vegan festival, which has been run by Compassion Over Killing over the last few years, saw over 15,000 people last year. This year, they expect more than 20,000 people to come see distinguished speakers, listen to live music, learn about vegan and vegetarian issues, and to eat lots of amazing vegan/vegetarian food. Last year, the Craft Kombucha team had the privilege of participating in the festival for the first time, and now they are back for more!

This week's playlist is in honor of the big event, consisting of artists and bands with vegan or vegetarian members. Some you may already know about (Morrissey of The Smiths is an obvious choice), and others you may not (one may be Common, the Chicago-based rapper that co-performed the Oscars' winning score 'Glory' last year).

So go ahead and check out this eclectic mix of animal-loving artists, and be sure to check out this year's festivities at VegFest, this Saturday, October 3rd, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Kickstart Craft Kombucha - Thank You!

It's time!

Not too long ago, our amazing customers showed us just how much they love our kombucha by supporting our Kickstarter campaign. One of the promises we made when we undertook that campaign was to make sure every one of our supporters knew just how much they are valued and appreciated. That's why our first reward was a public 'thank you', which was included in every other reward tier.

In the time since our campaign finished (at over 100% successful funding), we've been working to deliver all of the rewards we promised. In the style of Southern hospitality, we figured there's no better place to start than with a 'thank you'. For those of you that got higher tier rewards, expect those by the end of September, unless if you have a walk with Guinness or a $10 growler. If you got the walk with Guinness, we'll get in touch with you soon to schedule your one-on-one time with the star of the show. If you got a $10 growler, just let us know next time you stop by the market and we'll fill one up for you!

So without further ado, we would like to thank every single one of our backers for helping Craft Kombucha take it to the next level and continue doing what we love! Thanks guys, you're all more amazing than you could possibly know!

What We're Listening To - Vol. 13

SXSW Edition

First off, if you haven't voted for our South by Southwest panel, 'Fermentation Nation: Culturing Our Culture,' yet, DO IT! The link to the Panelpicker site is here, or you can click the top button on the right. Terry Romero, our good friend and advisor over at Kickstarter, is the force behind this awesome panel that will discuss how fermented foods and drinks are creating communities.  You can click the bottom right button to check out our blog post from last week with all the details on the panel, or use this link, here

Now, onto this week's playlist. Since we're clearly looking forward to going to next year's SXSW festival, it only made sense to dedicate this week's playlist to some of last year's headliners worth nothing (according to Complex and Consequence of Sound). The list includes a mix of alternative, rock, electronic, and hip-hop/rap artists that are emerging on the scene.

Photo from SXSW (2015)

Photo from SXSW (2015)

Most of you have probably heard of SXSW, but may not know just what it's all about. Well consider this your crash course; you'll soon understand exactly why we're so excited about the opportunity to participate and attend in 2016.

Now "the premier destination for discovery," the festival began in Austin, Texas 18 years ago. Each year the event has grown, both in size and cultural importance, being a space for creative thinkers worldwide to converge - whether they be musicians, artists, documentarians or other film types, or technological innovators. Over the course of 10+ days, people swarm to view and participate in a variety of conferences and festivals that take place in different venues all over the city.

In the words of the SXSW people themselves:

"New media presentations, music showcases and film screenings provide buzz-generating exposure for creators and compelling entertainment for audiences. Conference panel discussions present a forum for learning, business activity thrives at the Trade Shows and global networking opportunities abound. Intellectual and creative intermingling among industry leaders continues to spark new ideas and carve the path for the future of each ever-evolving field, long after the events’ conclusion."

Basically, SXSW isn't your traditional music-centric festival. Rather than just coming to listen to some of your favorite artists (which is still a pretty amazing experience), you have the chance to learn something and take part in something with the potential to make an impact in the world. If that's not exciting, we don't know what is.

So go ahead and click the link above to vote for our panel (if you haven't done so already) and give us the chance to be part of this special event. Make sure to click the link below to listen to our SXSW 2015-themed playlist while you vote for our panel, and any others that pique your interest.

Cheers!

Put On Your Super-Suit

Nothing gets us in the mood for movie-watching more than summer. There's just something about curling up with a tub of buttery popcorn and watching a flick.

One of the truly great things about summer in  DC is the seemingly endless number of outdoor movie screenings you can see, all over the city. This Thursday, we headed over to Canal Park to watch last summer's big hit, Guardians of the Galaxy. Note, if you haven't seen the blockbuster yet, we highly recommend you give it a shot, especially if you're a fan of action movies or sci-fi.

While we enjoyed ourselves at the screening, it really put us in the mood to go back and watch our way through the entire Marvel cinematic universe. So, that's what you'll find us doing for the next few nights, starting with the movie that kickstarted the whole thing, Iron Man (a personal favorite).

Here's our lineup (in the correct order, of course):

  • Iron Man
  • The Incredible Hulk
  • Iron Man 2
  • Thor
  • Captain America: The First Avenger
  • Marvel's The Avengers
  • Iron Man 3
  • Thor: The Dark World
  • Guardians of the Galaxy (we can't say no to a second viewing!)
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron

To wrap it all up, we're planning on checking out Ant Man in theaters on Monday night, since we haven't had the chance to do so yet. And who knows, we may throw in Fantastic Four to our weekend movie marathon, since it is also technically in the Marvel universe and, conveniently, still in theaters as well.

How about you guys? Any movie-related plans this weekend? Let us know what you're up to this weekend, at mtpculutred@gmail.com, and you could be featured on our blog and social media!

Craft Kombucha Insiders: An Exciting Kickstarter Update

We're only halfway through August, and already it has been a big month for Craft Kombucha. If you backed our campaign on Kickstarter back in April, your rewards are in production, and will be showing up on your doorsteps in September, which is obviously very exciting. But, we still have other great news!

Remember when we told you about our collaboration with Runningbyrd Tea Company a little while ago? Well, it's finally here! We have teamed up with Ben, founder of Runningbyrd, to create a flavor using his Summer Rain tea, an Indian Masala Chai tea with a peppery finish. The tea and our kombucha come together to create a delicious drink with the taste of a lightened Chai tea and dry champagne. Keep an eye out on our social media accounts, or subscribe to our newsletter (here) to see where you can find this delectable, limited-release flavor.

Now, onto some extremely exciting news...

Over the years, the SXSW Festival has grown to be a cultural phenomenon. A confluence of music, art, and technology, it brings together some of the greatest thinkers in the country in Austin, Texas.

That's why we're so excited to have a chance to be a part of the festival - Terry Romero, one of our amazing friends at Kickstarter, has put together the idea for a panel called "Fermentation Nation: Culturing Our Culture," and has invited us to be a speaker! The panel would discuss the renaissance of fermented foods currently taking place in the United States, as well as the communities that this movement has created.

Now, here's the thing - the festival chooses its panels based on the public's votes. So this is where you com in! If you want us to be a part of this year's festival, head on over to the SXSW PanelPicker (here) to cast a vote for the "Fermentation Nation: Culturing Our Culture" panel to send us to Austin.

So, what are you waiting for? Get voting already and then reward yourself with a bottle of our latest and greatest collaboration flavor!

Dogs of Mount Pleasant: Get Schooled!

Puppy training classes coming to Mount Pleasant

For those of you that have met the Craft Kombucha mascot, Guinness, at the Mount Pleasant Farmers' Market or around the neighborhood, you know that he was born for a life of stardom. He is extremely well-behaved and very social. His brand new sister, 'Bucha, has a tendency to be a little bit mischievous, though. Thanks to her naughty streak, we had an idea - why not start up a puppy class right here in Mount Pleasant? So, that's exactly what we've done with Mount Pleasant, Cultured featured contributor Juliana Willems! Juliana works with Dog Latin Dog Training, and has agreed to teach a group of Mount Pleasant pups how to make the nice list this year.

Puppyhood, while filled with joy and love, can be frustrating when we don't have a way to communicate to our dog what we want from him. Dog Latin Dog Training puppy classes teach people and dogs through positive reinforcement, giving owners the tools to get behaviors we want from our puppies. This is the time in a puppy’s life to start building desirable habits and teaching good manners!

If you are interested in Dog Latin Dog Training's puppy classes in Mt. Pleasant, email Juliana@doglatindogtraining.com for more information.

More about our featured contributor:

Juliana Willems KPA-CTP has lived in Mt. Pleasant for almost two years now. She is a dog trainer with DC based company Dog Latin Dog Training, and her specialty is working with rambunctious, reactive or anxious dogs. Because her work with dogs started in animal sheltering, Juliana has a soft spot in her heart for rescue dogs and fostered dogs in need for many years. Juliana writes about fostering and training dogs in her blog Peace, Love & Fostering

What We're Listening To - Vol. 12

Nashville Nights

By: Megan Betcher, Mount Pleasant, Cultured Editor

This weekend I had the opportunity to visit Nashville, Tennessee to celebrate the upcoming nuptials of a close friend from college. I have heard a lot about Nashville over the last few years - that it's a fun, vibrant city, with plenty of activities to keep you occupied, that it's a country music mecca, that it is (apparently) the top destination for bachelorette weekends in the nation. So when I disembarked my plane at 3:00 p.m. Friday and stepped foot into Music City, I was excited to see if it would live up to the hype.

Without a doubt, this Southern city has earned both its name and reputation. Over the course of my three-day stay, I found myself falling in love with Nashville. Days and nights spent walking and riding around the city with friends, enjoying some of the best food, drink and music to be found have been the highlight of my summer. If you're looking to escape the East Coast for a brief period, I would recommend this destination in a heartbeat.

Now, I'm not much of a country music fan, but since I landed back in the District, I've been blasting it and dreaming of sunny summer days spent on Broadway Street with some of my favorite people. This week's 'What We're Listening To' playlist is made up of country hits, both new and old, that have been playing on my iTunes non-stop over the last few days. Join me as I reminisce on Nashville Nights and click on the button below to listen to the playlist on Spotify.

The Rundown: Mosaic Central Farmers' Market

If you're looking to leave Mount Pleasant and Washington, D.C. on a Sunday, here's where you should head.

Mount Pleasant, and the Mount Pleasant Farmers' Market, will always be home to the Craft Kombucha team. However, after careful consideration, we have decided that it's time to show Virginia some love!

We already have tap locations in Arlington, at South Block's Clarendon juice bar and East Falls Church store, but what we really wanted for Virginia was its very own farmers' market. Our choice for our first Virginia market? The Mosaic Central Farmers' Market, located in Fairfax's hip, new neighborhood, the Mosaic District.

Our first day at the market was blistering hot, but that didn't stop us, other market vendors and the market patrons from having a great time! When we weren't hiding in the shaded shelter of our tent, we took some time to check out our new Sunday hangout. We knew that there was going to be a lot going on, and we surely were not disappointed. There was so much to see and do, between our numerous, fellow vendors and the abundance of shopping, entertainment and dining in the Mosaic District.

The farmers' market has everything you could possibly need - fresh farm produce, chicken, pork, and other meat products (including our favorite Meat Crafters pre-packed sausage), cheese, dairy, eggs, pasta, dog food, flowers and artisanal goods are all readily available. There's also plenty of prepared food ready for you to grab and eat as you walk around the market (we have been munching on crab cake sandwiches from the delightful people at Bushdogs, just across from our own tent).

Once you've had your fill of shopping and are looking to move indoors to the air conditioning, there's no shortage of shops and restaurants in the surrounding area to go cool off at. The main square of the Mosaic District is located right at the opening of the farmers' market, with a green space, a fountain, and several restaurants, including Ted's Bulletin, Matchbox, Cyclone Anaya's and Mom & Pop (a small pop-up coffee shop operated by the good people of Dolcezza Gelato). If you already had your lunch at the farmers' market and aren't looking for a second meal, you may prefer to beat the heat in the Angelika Film Center while watching the latest and greatest movie releases.

Want to see what this market is all about for yourself? Stop by and see us between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Sundays! For more information about the market, take a look at the list of vendors underneath the photo gallery below, or visit the Mosaic Central Farmers' Market website, here. You can also learn more about the Mosaic District on their website, here.

What We're Listening To - Vol. 11

Let's Get Physical!

Spend even a small amount of time out-and-about in Washington, D.C., and one of the first things you'll notice is that everybody runs. And we mean everybody. (When was the last time you didn't see at least one person out on their daily run?)

Hanging out with Guinness and 'Buch mean frequent walks around Rock Creek Park, an activity that we love. However, we've just recently rediscovered the joy of getting out there by yourself and running until your legs give out. Whether you prefer to jog through the park, or run along the memorials, there is no shortage of routes to take around the city while getting your exercise fix.

This week's playlist is the perfect motivational mix from the people over at Shape. So if you're struggling through your next workout, just plug your headphones and press play! You can listen to the playlist on our Spotify page, below.

Best Places to Grab Coffee in Mount Pleasant

We've put together a group of great coffee places in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood and the surrounding area for you to explore and fall in love with. Included on our list is the latest addition to the Mount Pleasant streetscape, Habit.

To some, it may seem counterintuitive to drink a hot beverage on a hot day. For others, a cup of coffee is the only thing guaranteed to give them the jumpstart they need to get through the day. If you are one of those people uncertain about the prospect of sipping on a hot cup o' joe, fret not, that is what iced coffee is for!

Room 11

3234 11th Street NW, Washington, DC 20010 (on the corner of 11th Street + Lamont Street) | (202) 332-3234

Just over on 11th Street, Room 11 is serving up quality coffee from Four Barrell Coffee. Whether you are in the mood for cold brew (served on draft), drip coffee, French Press, or an espresso, this hip hangout has you covered. There is also a great lineup of breakfast options, including granola, a grilled asparagus omelette, quiche, and our personal favorite, the build-your-own biscuit. If none of those suit your fancy, you can always try a classic bagel from Bullfrog Bagels.

If you haven't gotten your fill of Room 11 after your morning coffee, no problem, they also serve lunch and dinner! Check out their menus, here.

Dos Gringos

3116 Mount Pleasant Street NW, Washington, DC 20010 | (202) 462-1159

Starbucks isn't the only place to find an iced coffee on your way to the Columbia Heights Metro stop for your morning commute! Alex, the owner of Dos Gringos, serves up iced coffee daily right on the front stoop of the restaurant. You can get your caffeine fix for just $1, which is a much better deal than the large chains, if you ask us.

Oh, and did we mention that it's dog friendly? Because it is! Refreshment is available for the dogs as well, with a bowl of water for them to lap away at while you grab your morning pick-me-up for a walk around Mount Pleasant with the pups.

Coffy Café

3310 14th Street NW, Washington, DC 20010 (202) 588-5660

Located at the corner of Park Rd. and 14th St., Coffy Café is an independently owned cafe, bringing you coffee, crepes, and conversation. Coffy was founded with the intentions of creating a unique space in the neighborhood with a 60s & 70s feel to it and works to bring their childhood kitchen and living room to the neighborhood. The café's groovy vibe makes it a neighborhood staple, with delicious food both sweet and savory, as well as a kids menu for young-ones or the young-at-heart. You can even rent out table space for free from them, making it a great place for a work rendez-vous!

Their specialty coffee uses beans ground on the spot and made using the European method to create a finer, sweeter espresso with a light "crema." They combine this with hands-on frothing of milk to create a latte that is foamier, sweeter, and richer. The menu includes sweet & savory crepes, smoothies, tea, coffee and espresso drinks.

You can learn more about Coffy Café and check out their full menu on their website, here

The Coupe

3415 11th Street NW, Washington, DC 20010 (202) 290-3342

The Coupe is a part of the Tryst Central family of restaurants, including DC favorites Tryst, Open City, The Diner & Tryst at the Phillips. The Coupe is a french-american cafe, coffeehouse, and bar, with a focus on locally sourced products. Their meat, eggs, and dairy are all from local, organic farms, their booze is from several DC breweries and distilleries, and their coffee, through Counter Culture, is from small family farms. The Coupe strives to avoid national chains and factory farms to contribute to the small economies that support individuals and brings the neighborhood better tasting products that are better for the world.

You can read more about The Coupe and find their full menu on their website, here.

Flying Fish has a prime location right on Mount Pleasant St. and is dedicated to making the neighborhood happy through good coffee. Founded by Michael Visser, a trained pastry-chef, Flying Fish started out as your typical neighborhood coffee shop but has continued to evolve since its creation. The food menu has evolved continuously to meet the needs of Mt Pleasant and also to make home for Visser's more interesting pastry ideas. The coffee has remained consistent though, with Trickling Springs Creamery's milk, Art of Tea's loose leaf teas, and Counter Culture's coffee. Counter Culture was founded with an emphasis on high quality coffee, sustainability, and education, and works to improve all of these throughout the coffee chain, while thinking locally. Flying Fish is committed to making as much in house as possible, and all of their syrups and mixes are made in house.

Check out Flying Fish, their menu, and some "schwag" on their website, here

Purple Patch opened up in Mt Pleasant earlier this year bringing an interesting Filipino-American cuisine to the neighborhood. As a part of the space they acquired in the purchase of Tonic, a place long time Mt Pleasant residents will remember, owners Drew and Patrice Cleary are opening up a coffee and breakfast place under Radius Pizza. Habit Coffee has just opened and is quickly finding success, filling the niche of Australian meat pies we didn't even know the neighborhood needed! The owners have set up Habit as a grab and go spot, with a mellow feel to it. While they are under the same management, Habit and Purple Patch will not offer each other's foods on the others menus, so you'll just have to try them both, maybe a breakfast followed by lunch?

On the run and looking to grab a few groceries or essentials along with your coffee to go? Argyle Convenient Store is your best bet in Mount Pleasant. Argyle has been open for almost 30 years, but has recently changed hands. Since it's new owners took over, a coffee bar and a selection of goodies from Firehook Bakery have become a prominent feature of the establishment. The market is open late, which means it's also a good option for when you come down with a serious case of the late night munchies.

What We're Listening To - Vol. 10

Independence Day

Washington, D.C. is the premier destination once a year for thousands of tourists, who flock to the city for one of our most important national holidays, the Fourth of July. This weekend marks the 239th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, an occasion that holds special value here in the nation's capital. There are plenty of opportunities to delve deep into our nation's history, from viewing the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution at the National Archives, to seeing the Star-Spangled Banner at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.

But as Washington, D.C. natives, you have the opportunity to check out the museums 365 days a year. Instead, Independence Day in DC is all about spending your day outside with your friends, whether you're by the bar or manning the grill, and finding the perfect vantage point to enjoy the city's famous fireworks display at night. If you're lucky, you may even be spending your day watching Dave Grohl, a DC native himself, playing at RFK Stadium with the Foo Fighters.

We're gonna need a bigger boat...

It's summer, which can only mean one thing: Shark Week is coming! The television event put on by the Discovery Channel has become something of a phenomenon over the last few years, thanks in part to Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly's hit comedy Step Brothers. This year's big event starts next Sunday, July 5th, with a lineup of episodes all week long meant to bring out your shark enthusiast. We're particularly looking forward to "Bride of Jaws" this year.

We're getting in the mood for Shark Week this weekend by watching a cinema classic, Jaws. The Steven Spielberg franchise helped trigger the American public's intense interest in the ocean predator, and has had children looking for an ominous fin peaking out of the water at the beach for the last 40 years. The computer graphics may not be nearly as realistic as what's used in today's films, but the Great White villain of the film is still capable of giving us the chills.

Get out there and enjoy your weekend, and remember, live every week like it's Shark Week!

What We're Listening To - Vol. 9

Usually we stick to a theme for What We're Listening To Wednesdays (#WWLTWednesdays), but today, we decided to switch it up.

Last summer, the world got its first taste of the music of Ryn Weaver. When she uploaded her song "OctaHate" onto Soundcloud last June, people noticed. To date, her first single has been played over 3.7 million times on that platform, and over 8 million times on Spotify, according to the New York Times

Yesterday marked the release of her debut album, "The Fool", an occasion that we have been awaiting with great anticipation. We pre-ordered the album the second it was available, and have been listening to it on repeat since it showed up in our iTunes early this morning.

Want to know why we're so hyped about this new, up-and-coming artist? Take a listen to the album in our What We're Listening To playlist for this week, below.

On Tap: Craft Kombucha at Little Red Fox

Yesterday, we took a little field trip to visit one of our favorite lunch spots in Washington, D.C., Little Red Fox.

Joining us was the newest member of the Craft Kombucha family, Bucha! Still just a puppy, Guinness' new little sister is a bundle of energy. She's still getting adjusted to life in the city, but she loved her first outing to Craft Kombucha's newest tap location. While little miss Bucha tried to get her brother to join in playtime, the Craft Kombucha team enjoyed some of the best treats Little Red Fox has to offer.

There are plenty of great lunch options to try out, but the clear group favorite was their one-of-a-kind grilled cheese - decked out with Tillamook cheddar cheese, apple butter, and if you request it, bacon. The cafe is also known for their beautiful and delicious apple pies - a good alternative to your traditional birthday cake if cake isn't your thing. While we are normally pro-apple pie, today we decided to vary from the norm and try a few slices of their blueberry-ginger and honey oat pies. Neither disappointed.

If you're looking for something to grab and go, you have the option to take your meal to go. Shelves and refrigerated units along the right hand side are filled with other options for you to take on your way, including teas from our friends at Runningbyrd Tea Company and tonics from Gouter. For our fellow craft beer enthusiasts, there is also a find an excellent lineup of craft beers right when you walk in.

If you haven't had a chance to stop by yet, you should definitely consider this Connecticut Avenue hangout for your next lunchtime destination. While there, you can grab a glass of one of our two flavors currently on tap, Grapefruit and Little Red Fox Ginger, an exclusive apple-ginger mix.

Cheers!

Songs of the Summer

With temperatures settling in the 90s and the occasional thunderstorm blowing through, it looks like summer is here to stay. After a particularly long winter, we're excited to finally go outside and enjoy the summer sun, even if the humidity can be a bit daunting at times.

To celebrate the return of weather that just begs you to throw on a swimsuit and head to the beach, we've put together a playlist of the best summer songs across the decades. Prepare yourself for lots of hits from The Beach Boys, as no warm-weather playlist is complete without at least a few tunes from the unequivocal "kings of summer". Personally, we suggest you plug your iPod or phone in, press play, and roll the windows down - like we did on our way to one of our favorite summer daytrip destinations, Annapolis, this weekend.

Cheers!

Introducing Kelly Towles - DC Artist + Craft Kombucha Collaborator

If you hadn't already heard, Craft Kombucha was successfully funded on Kickstarter in April, allowing for expansion into a new kitchen space and an increase in production. Since the completion of the campaign, the Craft Kombucha team has been hard at work to bring loyal supporters their rewards. As such, we're very excited to bring you a development regarding several of those rewards - we are working in collaboration with emerging DC-based artist Kelly Towles to create our exclusive stickers and t-shirts!

If you don't know Kelly by name, you may recognize some of his work, such as the installations he did for the Sweetlife festival last year and his murals in the U Street Music Hall, DC Brau, or Toki Underground. With such an impressive body of work, you can be sure that your newest piece Craft Kombucha swag will be ultra cool.

We'll continue to keep you posted here on the progress of Craft Kombucha's expansion and other cool Kickstarter related news.  In the meantime, take a look at Kelly's work to see what you can expect from the newest batch of Craft Kombucha swag! See Kelly's work, here.

What We're Listening To: Volume 6

Last Saturday, the Craft Kombucha team had the privilege of participating in the OWN IT Summit, hosted by the Georgetown University Women in Leadership board. The event centers on creating meaningful and thought-provoking conversations about female leadership in today's world by bringing together women of power and the college students that look up to them.

We are still buzzing with excitement after being surrounded by so many amazing women for an entire day. To keep that enthusiasm going, we've put together a little 'girl power' playlist for the week. Click the button below to 'spice up your life' and listen to our playlist on Spotify!
